Cute (and Cheap!) Ways to Arrange Your Flowers

(Via Pinterest)
April showers bring May flowers and I don't know about you, but I sure am excited to buy some fresh flowers for my house. If I could, I would have flowers in my pockets and carry them around everywhere I go!

Some tips for flower arrangements:
1. Keep water fresh. Your flowers will live for over up to two weeks with fresh water!
2. Keep leaves out of the water to prevent water contamination!
3. Cut an inch off the stems before putting them in water - this increases absorption.

Here are a bunch of cute ideas for to display your pretty flowers, plus they are totally affordable- who needs traditional vases anyway?

(Via Pinterest)
Use a wine bottle or any other bottles as a vase.

(lovelylittledetails.com)
Paint mason jars and use as vases (paint goes on the inside, shake it up until bottle is covered in paint and let dry.)

(missingperfection.tumblr.com)
Think outside the box for vase options - antique tins, cute tea containers, even wine bottles make very pretty "vases" for your flowers.

Roses and Poses-

Business 101: Lessons to Learn From Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile

Source: Google Images

I don't know about you all, but I'm excited for Halloween! I hope you are going to dress up and have a good time. I was thinking back to my costume last year, which was Cleopatra, Queen of the NIle and this year, Heidi Klum dressed as Cleopatra for her annual Halloween party. Many people think of Cleopatra as a tempting seductress who looks a bit like Elizabeth Taylor (thanks to the latter playing the Queen in the movie, Cleopatra), but there is more to her. Famous for her looks and feisty personality; Cleopatra was one of the most powerful rulers of Egypt. She was a pharaoh which was a rare occurrence, since most queens in those times did not rule a country - their husbands did. Although she lived some 2000 years ago, her skills and leadership still holds relevance in today's day and age. So here's my run down of Cleopatra and things we can learn from her:

1. If you want to, you can rule the world (and why wouldn't you want to?)
Cleopatra Vii Philopator, known to the whole entire world simply as Cleopatra, was the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt. Yes, she worked the first-name-only thing way before Madonna or Beyoncé. In fact, she did this 2000 years before either of them. That alone should tell you something. More importantly though, she was the last ruler of Ancient Egypt, that's right, she basically ruled the world. In a time when women were regarded as merely beautiful objects, she didn't let society's views stop her - instead, she used her femininity and sexuality to her advantage, all to save her country and it's people from the Roman Empire. She believed she deserved the best, and she accepted the perks as well as the responsibilities of the job.

2. Know yourself and flaunt your strengths.
Cleopatra was a woman. She was a woman ruler, a pharaoh, and had to conduct business with people from her own country as well as others. Needless to say, they were all men. Yet, here she was, a woman, controlling the world. She had to assert herself, and show these people that her gender had nothing to do with her capability to rule them. If anything, she used her gender (what people thought was a weakness in politics) and it was, more often than not her greatest strength.

Source: vgitanacleopatra.blogspot.com
3. Woah, wait a minute. Using your femininity won't get you very far. You need to be smart and intelligent. Hone your intellect.
Sure, Cleopatra used her sexuality and charm, and a lot of emphasis has been given to this fact. But don't forget, her femininity was simply an outer covering for her true weapon - her mind. Cleopatra was very intelligent, fluent in many languages, and well-versed in politics. She used looks, charm and grace to get what she wanted along with wit and humor. Simply put, she was bewitching. It's no wonder she portrayed herself as the reincarnation of an Egyptian Goddess.

4. It's all about the timing. But sometimes, there is no time like the present. And age doesn't matter.
Our girl Cleo had to ascend the throne when she was just 18. Egypt was a wealthy country in those times and she was controlling a lot of land. While these communities and their work only enriched her coffers, she also had to protect them and make sure that her country and its lands kept thriving. Insert charm and wit here and the lady does a good job of keeping her country together.

5. Don't let the pressure and responsibility stop you from achieving your true potential and maintaining your greatness.
See lesson #3 above. When Egypt was under threat of a hostile takeover from Rome, what did the lovely Queen of the Nile do? She wrapped herself up in a carpet and got delivered to Caesar's room. Then she seduced him in an attempt to thwart this takeover and gain the sympathy and goodwill of the Romans. It worked. I wouldn't suggest doing exactly what she did, but the important lesson to learn is that she thought outside the box, and in those times, women didn't have a lot of resources. I guess she was using the resources she did have. But here in the present day, there is this little thing called ethics, so instead of fluttering your eyelashes and connecting the dots to success, know that hard work and effort will definitely be more rewarding. So don't use this as an excuse to throw yourself in a carpet or anything!

6. On that same note, don't mix business with pleasure.
Yes, it bears repeating.

7. Appearance matters.
Cleopatra and for that matter, Egyptian queens in general, had a distinct look - the long slanted eyeliner, the glamorous clothing, ornate gold jewelry and the heavy make-up. It all creates an aura. As I mentioned before, Cleopatra carried herself well and claimed she was a reincarnation of an Egyptian Goddess. This fits well with being the ruler of the country and she definitely looked the part.

8. Network and maintain good relationships.
If not for the support of Caesar and later Mark Antony, Cleopatra would not have been able to take control of the Egyptian throne and expand her empire. Having the support of such high ranking Romans ensured that her interests were taken into consideration. She knew how to play the game, this one.

9. Master the wow factor!
Cleopatra knew how to make an entrance. When Mark Anthony first arrived in Rome, she got his attention by sailing down the Nile in all her glory, on an intricately decorated barge. Descriptions of this event point out the grandeur and luxury that Cleopatra exuded, dressed as Venus and her oarsmen as Cupids. Many of you, I'm sure, have heard the saying, "It is better to be overdressed than under-dressed." Similarly, it is better to be looked over and than overlooked, so go big or go home!

So there you have it, nine lessons to learn from Cleopatra. What are your thoughts on the great Queen of the Nile? I would love to see your comments :)

XOXO - Chrissy

Job Hunting - Bits and Pieces of Information and Advice

I recently read that there are four unemployed people for every available job and since I had a job interview on Monday (a summer job but still), I thought I'd post about some tips that I think are important to help you with your own job search.

Network, Network, Network
I can't stress this enough. It is so important to take the time to meet and maintain connections with people. Help them out and they will help you too, or at least point to someone who can. Make use of social networking sites - create a profile on LinkedIn, it's a great way to be noticed professionally. Twitter is an equally important tool - follow your mentors, role models and companies you want to work for. I wasn't sure I wanted a Twitter account because I didn't want to juggle too many websites, but I did because of all the great things I heard about it and now I'm a believer, happily tweeting away! Remember, while it's important to know people, it's probably more important that they know you. Also, be genuine. If you don't like networking, it will show, and nobody wants to talk to someone who is not interested/interesting.

Step outside the box.
Be creative. In today's competitive job market, companies are flooded with resumes within minutes of an advertised vacancy and you need to know how to stand out - in a good way. Be willing to go out of your way to get the job. Don't just plop your resume on a pile at the job fair. Instead wait - even if it's over an hour - to meet the company rep and get a few minutes of their time to tell them why you would be a good fit.

Preparation!
On that note, it's important to prepare ahead of time. It isn't enough to just get to meet the employer. You need to research the company, know what their goals and objectives are, learn what they expect from employees and apply it to your skill set. Explain to them what you can do for them. Preparation goes a long way, improvisation doesn't always work.

Be a problem-solver
Do your research and look at how you can make the company (you want to work for) better. Maybe have a PowerPoint presentation on the problems you found and what you could do in your position to solve them. Even if the solutions do not fall under the responsibilities you are interviewing for, it will get you noticed if you talk about them. it means you have vision and are willing to genuinely improve the company. If I were hiring, I would like that in an employee - just saying.

Fine-tune your resume and match your skills.
If the job description calls for a "market researcher", include the words conducted market research etc.etc - provided this is true. Employers don't have the time to read between the lines and key words like that should stand out to them.

Hopefully these tips will come in handy for you. Good luck on your job search!

10 Ideas for a Romantic, Inexpensive Date

Hi again!

I hope everyone is enjoying summer as much as I have this year and if you're lucky you may even have gotten yourself into a hot summer fling! Well, my boyfriend and I had a cute little candlelit dinner at the park last night and so I thought a date post was in order. Read on!

1. Fun times at the fair

{Source}
All sorts of fairs and carnivals pop up in the summertime. Who said old-school wasn't cool anymore? Cotton candy and a ride on the Ferris wheel, not to mention the magical moment when it stops at the top allowing for a full on make-out session. Yes please! Note to boys: aforementioned magical moment doesn't just happen. You're not starring in your own movie, so please be a doll and tip the person in charge of the ride to stop when you and your date have a nice view of the whole fairgrounds :)

2. Visit your local farmers' market

Spend a Sunday wandering your local farmers' market. It's a great way to relax and you get to taste-test fresh local food. Buy some yummy ingredients so that you can cook up a storm together later that day.

3. Go to "The Lake"

{Source}
Here in the Midwest, people are always saying they are going to "the lake". They don't specify which lake - Minnesota is the Land of 10000 Lakes, but they just go to "the lake". So head down to that lake for some quality time (Yes, I'm aware that I said lake like 10 times and that I said it again). If you're in a long-term relationship and past the honeymoon stage, this is a great way to unwind and rekindle that fire! If you don't have your own lake cabin, ask a friend - they might let you stay in theirs.

4. Have a picnic in the park

Throw some sandwiches, cookies and a bottle of wine into a basket and head to the park. Don't forget the cute checkered blanket to complete the picture. After your done eating under a big shady tree, lay down, listen to music or just talk.

5. Go to a drive-in theater

{Source}
Lots of places have outdoor theaters, especially in the summertime. This is a fun way to make your usual routine of dinner and a movie a little bit more interesting. They usually play classics so it's definitely going to help with the romance factor. Take some snacks and a bottle of wine if you will.

6. At-home spa date

{Source}
DIY just got more romantic. Decorate a space (bathroom, bedroom, living room - wherever) with scented candles, dim the lights and bring out the essential oils. If you want to go all out, this could be a lovely surprise waiting for your significant other at the end of a long work day :)

7. Get cute at a coffee shop

Casual, cheap and fun! This is a great way to get to know each other if you're on the first few dates. There's no pressure so you can relax and just go with the flow while still being intimate. Keep those lattes coming!

8. Stargazing on a warm night

Take a blanket - one that you won't mind getting dirty. Park your car close by and play soft, soothing music on your iPod. Lay on the grass and gaze at the stars. Simple and all for the low, low price of free!

9. Just Dance!

Anywhere. Just do it. Dance in the privacy of your living room with a glass of wine and some slow music playing in the background. Dance without music out in a garden or a park. There's something about dancing that brings two people closer together and the moment is almost always perfect.

10. Go apple picking

Or something like that. Trust me, it's fun. Visit a nearby orchard or vineyard. Or even a cornfield. The point is you're with your lover (!) and it's summertime. When winter rolls along, you'll be glad you did it.

Make the most of this summer and inject a little fun and romance into your life!
Have you tried any of these? Don't forget to share your experiences and ideas in the comments!

The Fresh List

Alright, so how many times have you been starving to death and finally hauled your ass out to the kitchen to look for something to eat in the fridge, only to realize it's been rotting for the past week (k, maybe that's stretching it a bit much, but still!). Yes, I'm talking to you, poor college students, and everybody else - I know this has happened to you at least a few times! Well, I got sick of this happening over and over again and decided to arm myself with knowledge and find out how long food items will last. Here it is:

Meat and Poultry - Uncooked

Raw poultry will start to go off after being in the fridge for about two days. Same goes for raw fish, raw shellfish and raw ground meats. These items last much, much longer when stored in the freezer but the trick is to keep things organized so you know what’s actually in there.
  • Chicken and turkey - Nine months
  • Steaks, beef - Six to 12 months
  • Chops, pork - Four to six months
  • Chops, lamb - Six to nine months
  • Roasts, beef - Six to 12 months
  • Roasts, lamb - Six to nine months
  • Roasts, pork and veal - Four to six months
  • Stew Meats - Three to four months
  • Ground meats - Three to four months

Dairy Products
  • Butter/margarine - Six to nine months
  • Cheese, soft and spreads, dips - One month
  • Cheese, hard or semi-hard - Six months
  • Eggs in shell- Do not freeze. Eggs can stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to five weeks.
  • Ice cream - One month
  • Milk / Cream - Three weeks

Dried Food Items - Shelf Life

Canned foods will remain safe for an indefinite period of time, but at some point, the quality will be so bad, you won’t want to use it. As long as the can is in good shape without any dents or rusting, and you follow the rules for storage, the food in the can will be fine.
  • Baking powder/soda - 18 months
  • Bread Crumbs - Six months
  • Cereals - Six months
  • Coffee creamer, dry - Six months
  • Flour/cake mixes - One year
  • Gelatin/pudding mixes - One year
  • Herbs/spices - Six to 12 months
  • Milk, nonfat dry - Six months
  • Pancake/pie crust mixes - Six months
  • Pasta/noodles - Two years
  • Potatoes, instant - 18 months
  • Rice, white - Two years
  • Sugar, granulated - Two years
  • Sugar, brown, confectioners'- Four months

Fruits & Vegetables
Commercially frozen fruits will last up to a year in your freezer. Commercially frozen vegetables have a life-span of only eight months. Where cooked food is concerned, leftovers stored in the fridge are only good for about 3 -4 days and this includes cooked vegetables.

Drinks
Most juices that you buy, such as apple juice, can last 3-5 years un-opened. If you are unsure of how long your juice will last, contact the manufacturer's consumer phone number.

Optional Items
  • Chocolate - unsweetened 18 months
  • Coffee, vacuum pack - One year
  • Milk, canned - One year
  • Molasses - Two years
  • Nuts - Eight months
  • Oils/salad dressings - Three months
  • Peanut butter (unopened) - Six months
  • Sauces, condiments, relishes (unopened) - One year
  • Shortening - Eight months
  • Syrups - One year
  • Tea - 18 months

Now that you are armed with this information, go forth, save money and fill your tummies :)
