Fall/Winter 2014 Trend Report {Runway vs. Real way}

It's that time of year again ladies. As much as we hate to see summer end, we secretly get excited for the opportunity to flaunt our favorite fall fashion. After all, there is nothing like crisp weather and lots of luxe layers to make a girl feel glam. Without further ado, here are some of my favorite trends for Fall/Winter 2014-15:

Color Trends:
Red-Handed
Aurora Red and Sangria (like Burgundy, but without the brown tones) are the shades of red to wear this season. These tones bring some glamour and sparkle to the colder months, especially during the holidays. They suit almost every skin tone as well. Just try on different shades and if the color makes your skin look warm as opposed to washed out, then it will work on you.

Grayscale
I have always been a fan of gray because of how easy and effortless it is. Growing up, I noticed how gray can elevate minimal style. Turns out the fashionista in me was right on the money, because the runways this year took note of it as well. Gray looks very elegant and classy on winter coats structured with a minimal approach. Other ways to wear it would be in the form of workwear, turtlenecks, denim and even a nice structured purse.

Sky Blue
Sky blue can be a difficult shade to define. It is brighter than powder blue which was big last spring. To me, the perfect way to describe sky blue would be to picture a cloudless sky on a bright summer day. This shade looks great on outerwear, so if you want to buy a coat in an unexpected color, go for sky blue. Since this is a lighter color more reminiscent of the warmer months, pick heavier fabrics like wool in order to make it appropriate for winter.

Pretty Pastels
This season, pastels are a big deal for cold weather. Think mint, lavender and especially pale pink. You will notice that designers are keen on season-less dressing this year, which is why you see pastels, bright colors and streaks of neon on the runways this winter.

Bold Colors
Keeping with the season-less theme, bold colors are here to stay -- possibly until next winter! Think hot pink, yellow, emerald green and orange for example. Anything goes really. Don't forget Radiant Orchid, which is the color of the year. Streaks of neon on mainly dark neutrals also made an appearance on the runways.

Neutrals
As for neutrals, pine green, cognac, and midnight blue were seen on the runway. Black and white of course, still remains a fashion staple.

Style Trends:
Shearling + {Faux} Fur
Fur is always big when the cold season hits. This winter, shearling is trending, especially on motorcycle jackets. Buy one in a little bit boxier fit for a cool, modern update. Shearling on ankle boots also has the right dose of downtown cool. Remember, faux fur is always a kinder option rather than going for the real thing.

Chunky Knits
Oversize sweaters in a variety of colors and lengths were noticeable on the runway this year. I am planning on really maximizing this trend because I live in the frozen tundra (North Dakota). You can dress them down with denim and booties or dress them up with leather, midi skirts, and even work pants.

Rustic
For this trend, think country chic - more relaxed than lumberjack. Include pops of plaid, distressed denim, neutral colors and military jackets. These colors look good on almost every skin tone. Plus, you will be comfortable while still being on trend!

Fairy Tale
Dolce and Gabbana, Elie Saab, Alexander McQueen and Valentino are some of the designers who conspired to bring a taste of 'once upon a time' to fashionistas the world over. Their runways featured dreamy fabrics, embroidered details, and flowy silhouettes. For the non-Olivia Palermo's of the world (read: you and I), the best way to incorporate this trend is through flowy maxi dresses, winter florals, gold thread detailing, and beautiful capes.

Blanket Scarves
This trend can be credited to Burberry, since its debut on their runway created such a flurry of excitement in the fashion world. The thick, comfy scarves were richly hued and they were monogrammed with the initials of the models who paraded them on the runway. My fashion mission (ooh that rhymes) is to get my hands on a more affordable version of this beautiful accessory. Quick sidenote: ponchos and capes are also a big hit this season.

Mod 60's
Pastels, shift dresses, mini skirts and cardigans! Need I say more? Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren and Saint Laurent flaunted this trend on their runways.

Colorful Prints
This is a great way to transition your summer prints into the colder months. Geometric patterns, animal patterns, monochrome and dark florals all made an appearance on the runways. Take a chance and live colorfully!

Nordic
This trend is perfect for warm winters by the fire -- the popular fair isle print in particular feels very appropriate for the holiday season. Try colors like burgundy, navy blue and tan. Also, don't limit yourself to just sweaters. Instead, try skirts, dresses and even dressy sweatpants (another trend this season).

Boho Luxe
Bohemian style is not a new fall trend. In fact, it has made several comebacks over the years. This season, channel your inner nomad and experiment with layering, textures, and bold patterns (See blanket scarves, colorful prints, and bold colors above).

Other Trends:
Robe Coats
Over-the-Knee Boots
Leopard Print
Menswear
Gold
Velvet

What are your favorite trends this season? Leave me a comment and let me know, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

May the fashion be with you,
xoxo - Chrissy
