Style Q & A: How To Wear Harem Pants

I sometimes get questions about styling and fashion from my girlfriends and even guy friends since before I started this blog. It has always been a fun thing to do and although most of my friends have great style, it is still fun to help them out in the fashion department! This is the first installment in my new feature "Style Q & A". In this edition, I will talk about how to style Harem pants which is something my friend H wanted to know. She asked me a while back and I am just now getting to it - sorry H, but on the plus side, Harem pants are super in right now and it is going to be a big trend for spring/summer '14!

Q: Harem pants are so comfy. How do I style them in a more modern way?

A: Harem pants first originated in Persia and are commonly called MC Hammer pants, gypsy pants and joggers. They are incredibly comfortable and can actually be quite versatile. Here are some ways to style them -

First some general tips:
  • Avoid the exaggerated dropped crotch look. They are typically unflattering.
  • Do keep your look structured and sleek.
  • Avoid a busy overall look as this can tend to be costume-y.
  • Buy them in materials like cotton or jersey instead of silk and satin, which also helps it look less like a costume. I would personally stay away from the leather versions as well.
  • Don't be afraid to try printed harem pants.
  • Wear styles that are tapered at the leg or ankle to give the illusion of longer legs.
  • The top of the pant should be just below your natural waist, so a little higher than your bellybutton.

How to Wear Harem Pants - Casual Chic
{Created by Silk and Spice}
Look 1: First up, I created two very casual looks. These are good for a day of classes, errands or just a super laid back weekend. You will be very comfortable but also look chic and put together. I have worn the first look countless times and it is honestly one of my favorite "off-duty" looks. With harem pants, it is best to keep the top fitted. The muted grey and black tones of this look keep it classy, plus it gives off a very Parisienne vibe, non?

Look 2: I introduced some pops of color here with the turquoise and golden yellow. The loose tank works because it still somehow accentuates the body instead of being boxy, which is key with harem pants, at least in my opinion. Of course, as with any look, you will see models and eccentric socialites break these rules, but it is wiser for us to be a little more realistic/practical and apply these fashion guidelines to everyday life.

Look 1: I styled this look for a girl's night out on the town. It would work well in the fall or spring. The crepe material makes the harem pants look dressy and sophisticated. The loose pink tank will be tucked in and the sexy back is perfect for going out. A biker jacket and mesh heels give the look a hard edge, again appropriate for going out. If you don't own mesh heels, spiky or even crocodile pointy toe heels will do the trick.

Look 2: This look is more structured and work appropriate. The navy color and relative slimness of the pants is perfect for the office. I paired it with a light pink shirt and blazer with sharp lines. A nude purse with chunky blue heels complete the outfit. For a monochrome look, switch the pink blazer out with this blue tuxedo one. As for accessories, cluster earrings and a watch should do the trick. A sleek ponytail or high bun will compliment the sharpness of this outfit.

Look 1: I wanted to style a fun, summery look so I included these floral printed harem pants. Crop tops are still a huge trend and this hot pink version is on point. To accessorize, add chunky rings from the colors in the pants - oranges and blues. A boho cuff and beaded clutch also add to the fun appeal of this outfit. You can wear either open toed heels or flats with this look.

Look 2: This is another cute look you can wear to a summer concert or festival. Printed harem pants and a simple crop top paired with a floppy hat, colored flats and a cross body bag make for a laid back, boho outfit. Feel free to pile on the bracelets and rings here as well.

I hope you enjoy this Q & A! Please leave me a comment with feedback or a style question you would like answered, I love hearing from you!

Fingers crossed for Spring,
xoxo - Chrissy

  3. This was super helpful! I've been trying to gain the courage to try this trend for a while! Do you think the bottoms are too much for one who is extremely wide in the hip/thigh department?

    1. Thank you! I have wide hips and thighs too and I own a few pairs that I think look good on me. The key is to wear harem pants that are not too baggy or too tight. High waisted harems also look better as it can elongate the leg and accentuate your waist and proportions nicely. Hope this helps!
